Witch’s Salt, also known as Black Salt, Sal Negro or Drive Away Salt, stems from Folk and Hoodoo traditions. It is a powerful protective element, that can be used in many ways. Basically it absorbs and traps all negativity and protects you as well as your property and belongings.
On the Internet you can find hundreds of recipes, as every witch will come up with her own. This is just the basic recipe, but feel free to vary the ingredients to your needs and liking.
※ RECIPE ※
2C Salt
5 Eggshells
1 tbsp black pepper
1 tbsp scrapings from your cauldron (or active charcoal)
1 tsp ashes from a ritual fire or incense
These quantities are just a guideline for beginners. Trust your instinct, if you feel like you need to adapt them.
Always choose the highest quality available to intensify the mixture, for instance organic eggs, Himalayan salt and fresh pepper, but regular ingredients will do as well.
Pestle everything in a mortar and store it in a dry glass container.
※ USES ※
Whenever a spell or ritual requires regular salt, you can replace it with Black Salt as it is a much more intense version.
Cast your circle with it.
Sprinkle it around your property, over the threshold of (outside) doors and the bottom of window frames to create a protective barrier against in intruders.
Sprinkle it on the floor or add a bit to the floor wash and sweep all negativity out of your house.
Add to your bath water to get rid of stress, depression or any other negative feelings. Make sure to rub your bath thoroughly afterwards to get rid of the energies. (This can stain your bath tub, so be cautious!)
Keep a dish on your bedside table to avert night terrors. You can even sprinkle it under or around your bed for a more potent effect.
Carry a sachet or spell bottle with you to protect yourself from evil spirits and negativity.
※ REMEMBER ※
Black Salt traps all negativity, so anytime you want to get rid of it, make sure to move it AWAY from you. Sweep it up and out of your front door and pour the remains into moving water. Again, the water has to move away from you. You don’t want any of the negative energies to attach to you again.
Yesterday for Ostara I made a cake, based off of @orriculum ’s cake, to share with the gods. It is a honey milk cake with fresh fruit even if you are low on spoons. It is an adaptation of a simple box cake, and if you have the right tools only takes about an hour to make from start to finish.
Here is what you need:
🍰 Cakebox mix (I prefer vanilla or yellow cake)
🥛 Replace water in recipe with milk
🍯 Add ¼ to ½ cup honey (I like to draw sigils into the batter with the honey to infuse it with intent)
🥄 follow normal vanilla extract instructions, if available use ¼ tsp of almond extract as well
🥥 Grease pan with coconut oil and replace half of the butter with coconut oil for the recipe
🎂 Follow normal cakebox mix instructions, let cool when done
🍰 make whipped cream frosting by whipping together 16 oz heavy whipping cream, 1 cup sifted powder sugar, & 1 tsp vanilla extract
🍓 Decorate with fruit, flowers, & whipped cream frosting when you’re done
To pipe the cake I just put the frosting in a ziploc bag & cut off the corner.
The cake was super delicious and I am sure the gods liked it as much as I did.
Kitchen and Cottage witchcraft is really what I focus on and I love to do little things to encorperate little things into my every day practice and a great way to do that is in the kitchen. So I’m going to list some of my go to herbs and spices that I use. A page straight from my Book of Shadows
DISCLAIMER: NOT ALL HERBS FROM YOUR LOCAL WITCH SHOP ARE FOOD GRADE. MAKE SURE TO ASK FIRST. USING HERBS THAT AREN’T FOOD GRADE TASTE AWFUL AT THE LEAST AND CAN MAKE YOU SICK AT THE WORST.
Basil- Good for Protection. A favorite for pasta dishes. Use pesto as a good way to incorporate it. It’s also really good in soups.
Bay Lead- My favorite use for Bayleaf is healing, but not really physical wellbeing. I use it motly for emotional and spiritual healing. Really great after a long, stressful day. Cooks best in slow cooker meals like soups, stews, and pulled meats
Cinnamon- Protection and passion. I always find that it always brings a sense of warmth to whatever I’m making. I use it in a lot of sweets or whenever I’m making Chai.
Clove- Brings in warmth and casts out negativity. Clove is my favorite spice so I’ll add it to just about anything that’s “spicy”
Nutmeg- Strengthens divination. Nutmeg is really good in fall flavored baking and warm flavored stews, like those with a tomato base.
Pepper- Used for protection. I like to think of it as sort of a ‘bite’ at the things you need protection from. Actively expelling instead of putting up a “wall” like cinnamon.
Poppy seeds- Prosperity. Lemon poppy seed muffins are an amazing good luck charm to use before a a big test or meetings.
Rosemary- Purification, intellectual protection. Rosemary is a sort of go all herb. It goes great in roasts and traditional English and American cooking. Use a spring of rosemary on roast veggies, chicken, or steaks. It’s also good in homemade bread and can be used during Sabbats and Holidays as part of the feast.
Thyme- Divination and clarity. This is another sort of ‘old school’ herb. You can find it in a lot of simplistic cooking (three or four ingrediant meals) and in a lot of italian food. It pairs great with marinara, eggplants, and peppers. Roasted egg plant with olive oil and thyme is one of my favorites.
Vanilla- Love. I put a drop of vanilla in my coffee almost every morning to try and bring love into my day. It works great if you have a stressful job you need to remember to stay caring and level headed at (childcare, health care, support lines). I also like to use it in small short bread or sugar cookies and use those as offerings (particularly to Aphrodite)

Honey Oat Bread
Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk (almond or soy for vegan or dairy free)
- 2 tbsps unstated butter or margarine
- ¼ cup honey (agave for vegan)
- ¼ cup water, lukewarm
- 2 ¼ tsps instant yeast
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup oats (instant or old fashioned)
- 1 ½ tsp salt
For topping:
- 1 ½ - 2 tbsps honey, warmed (agave for vegan)
- 1 ½ -2 tbsps oats
Directions:
- In a small bowl heat the milk so that it is warm enough to melt the butter, but not boiling. Add the butter, stirring until melted, then stir in the water and honey.
- Stir the yeast into the mixture and let sit for 15 minutes until bubbly.
- In a large bowl, or the bowl of a standing mixer, combine the flour, oats, and salt.
- Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture, mixing with a dough hook or spoon until it just comes together to form a dough. Knead in the mixer or by hand for 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the bowl with a clean dry towel and allow to rise until doubled, about ½ to 1 hour.
- Once doubled, with your fingers, flatten the dough into a 9 by 12-inch rectangle. Tightly roll the dough, tucking the ends as needed, into a loaf. Place the shaped dough into a lightly greased 9×5-inch loaf pan, cover with a clean dry towl, and allow to rise until doubled, about ½ to 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees (180 C). Place an empty loaf pan on the bottom rack of the oven and bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- When the loaf is doubled again, brush the top with the warmed honey and sprinkle with the oats.
- Place the bread in the oven and pour the boiling water into the empty loaf pan on the bottom rack of the oven. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until the bread is deep golden brown and the internal temperature is about 190 degrees.
- Transfer to a wire cooling rack and allow to cool completely before serving.

Lemon Chamomile Whipped Shortbread Cookies
Ingredients:
- 2 cups salted butter or margarine, very soft
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tsps lemon zest
- 3 tsps loose chamomile tea
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Lighty grease three baking sheets.
- Using a hand-held electric beater, cream the butter, sugar, and vanilla until very creamy.
- Gradually beat in the cornstarch and flour.
- Beat in the lemon zest and chamomile. Continue to beat the batter for a full 10 minutes until it looks like slightly overbeaten whipped cream (see notes).
- Drop the batter by heaping tablespoons onto the prepared cookie sheets.
- Bake the cookies for approximately 15-20 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven just as they start to brown on the bottoms.
- Let the shortbread cookies cool on the cookie sheet for at least 10 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to finish cooling. Do be careful when moving them as they will fall apart if you transfer them too soon.
Notes:
- If you use a stand-mixer instead of a hand held electric beater, the cookies will fall flat. If you want to use your stand mixer, please make sure to reduce the time you mix the batter.
